Burger King
According the their website, Burger King was founded in 1954 and is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. Best known for their trademark Whopper burger, the franchise boasts over 11 million visits per day across over 19,000 locations globally. The Whopper (with cheese) is 740 calories, according to Fast Food Nutrition. The brand is owned by restaurant holding company Restaurant Brands International and is publicly traded under the stock ticker QSR.
McDonald's
According to their website, McDonald's was founded in 1954 and is the largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. Their name is one of the most recognizable brands globally as the company has more than 39,000 locations in about 100 countries. The best known McDonald's Burger is the Big Mac and they are known far and wide for their World Famous Fries. The success of McDonald's came from it's uniformity, having the same food, prepared the same way from coast to coast. The menu has expanded greatly since its opening, but its journey is also full of a lot of memories and nostalgia for multiple generations. Whether you remember the introduction of the McMuffin, Happy Meals as a kid, watching Ronald McDonald and the gang, or swinging through the drive-thru for a Shamrock Shake, you likely are familiar with the golden arches of McDonald's. Domino's Pizza
According to their website, Domino's Pizza was founded in 1960 and is the largest pizza chain in the United States. Domino's operates over 14,000 pizza restaurants in more than 85 countries, and delivers more than 1.5 million pizzas each day. Although Domino's is known for its pizza (and now sandwiches and pastas) it's biggest advantage over its competitors is the Domino's Pizza Tracker that got introduced to their website in 2009. This tool is used by Domino's employees to accurately walk you through the steps of your order, and it even alerts you when it is ready to be picked up. Pizza Hut
According to their website, Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 and is the second-largest pizza chain in the United States. They currently operate over 16,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. It has become famous over the years for its stuffed crust pizza and its claim that "No One Out-Pizzas the Hut". The brand is owned by restaurant holding company YUM! Chick-fil-A
According to their website, Chick-fil-A was founded in 1946 and currently leads the fast food industry in customer satisfaction and is the largest chicken restaurant chain in the United States. They are most known for their iconic Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich that has become a timeless classic for all to enjoy. Today you can find a Chick-fil-A restaurant from coast to coast as there are over 2,600 locations across 47 states in the United States. They have also expanded into Canada, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. You will find empty lots on Sundays because they are famously closed to give their employees a day of rest. The brand is privately owned and is not publicly traded, as the shares are split by family members of the founder.
Popeyes
According to their website, Popeyes was founded in 1972 and is the third largest chicken restaurant chain in the United States. For years you have been able to get fried chicken from this Louisiana-based restaurant, and it commonly seen as a direct competitor to KFC and Chick-fil-A. While it doesn't rank above it's competitors on this list, it is known across the country for it's popular Popeye's Chicken Sandwich. In 2019, this sandwich sold out quickly, and was near impossible to get your hands on. This began what's known as the chicken sandwich wars, where everyone had to stake their claim as the best chicken sandwich. This New Orleans based restaurant now has over 2,600 locations across the world, and everywhere they go, people are "Loving that Chicken from Popeyes". Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)
According to their website, KFC was founded in 1952 and is the second largest chicken chain in the United States. The most iconic part of this chain isn't necessarily the food, but it's mascot and fonder Colonel Sanders, who in 1976 was the second most recognizable celebrity in the world. Along with the man in white, KFC also became famous for it's "finger-lickin good" chicken and starting the trend of fried chicken in a bucket. While the menu has changed over the years, it still attracts families with its large bundles of chicken and sides. The original fast food chicken restaurant now has over 24,000 outlets in 145 countries across the world. The brand is owned by restaurant holding company YUM! Subway
According to their website, Subway was founded in 1965 and is the largest fast food sandwich chain in the world. Best known for their foot-long sandwiches (that used to be $5...) and portraying a healthier alternative than other fast food alternatives. There are currently over 33,000 locations worldwide and is always in competition with McDonald's and Starbucks for the most locations worldwide. Subway has also been at the center of some pretty mainstream controversies over the years, such as having bread that isn't bread and foot-longs not being 12 inches long. The brand is privately owned and is not publicly traded.
Wendy's
According to their website, Wendy's was founded in 1969 and is the third largest fast food hamburger chain in the United States. Although they are known for their classic items such as the Baconator, chili and chicken nuggets, their most popular item is the Frosty (available now in Strawberry). There are currently over 6,500 locations worldwide in 29 countries. If you aren't a fan of their food, their twitter account is wildly entertaining and has put together some savage tweets! The brand is publicly traded under the stock ticker WEN.
Taco Bell
According to their website, Taco Bell was founded in 1962 and is the largest Mexican restaurant chain in the United States. Their menu is full of items that are popular, but among them the Doritos Locos Taco and Crunchwrap stand above the rest! Also, it would feel like a crime to not mention Baja Blast, Taco Bell's unique Mountain Dew flavor that some would say is the best flavor! There are currently over 7,000 locations worldwide and serves over 40 million customers each week. Is it the best Mexican fast food? Debatable. But it's unique menu items (including breakfast!) and branding will continue to pull people in. The brand is owned by restaurant holding company YUM!
